The Academic Conference on New Technologies of Variable Frequency Power Supplies of China Power Supply Society was held in our university

The 2025 Academic Forum on New Technologies of Power Electronics and Variable Frequency Power Supplies, organized by the Special Committee of Variable Frequency Power Supplies and Electric Drives of China Power Supply Society, was successfully held in the Electrical Engineering Building of Huazhong University of Science and Technology on October 11–12, 2025.

The opening ceremony took place in Meeting Room B205 of the Electrical Engineering Building on the morning of October 11, attracting nearly 200 participants from across the country. Professor Lin Lei, Vice President of the Office of Science and Technology Development of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Professor Yang Geng, Chairman of the Special Committee of Variable Frequency Power Supplies and Electric Drives (Tsinghua University), delivered speeches respectively.

Professor Wang Dong from Naval University of Engineering delivered an invited report. Focusing on the special requirements of marine and airborne equipment for power systems, he systematically elaborated on the development trends and cutting-edge technologies of electrified power systems, and thoroughly discussed the commonalities and distinctive features of key technologies in marine and airborne motor systems, offering forward-looking guidance for the future development of the industry.

Professor Chen Cai from Huazhong University of Science and Technology presented innovative technologies and applications of SiC power semiconductor packaging and integration, and illustrated the current status and development trends of advanced packaging and integration technologies.

Professor Wu Huachun from Wuhan University of Technology analyzed the state-of-the-art of magnetic bearing technology, pointed out its performance bottlenecks and future directions, and provided key support for the development of high-speed and high-efficiency transmission systems.

Researcher Xu Wei from the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences proposed the "unequal amplitude slot vector theory" for linear induction motors, bringing new theoretical insights to linear drive technology.

Professor Zhang Xin from Zhejiang University (represented by Luan Moude) looked into the integration of artificial intelligence and power electronics, and expounded the innovative approaches of AI in system modeling, analysis and stability guarantee, which has pioneered a new paradigm for the advancement of this field.

On the afternoon of October 11, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Distinguished Lecturer Lecture Session was held in Meeting Room B205 of the Electrical Engineering Building. Professor Sun Kai from Tsinghua University, Chair of the IEEE China Membership Development Committee, introduced IEEE PELS and its Distinguished Lecturer Program. Five IEEE PELS Distinguished Lecturers and Regional Distinguished Lecturers delivered academic presentations respectively.

Professor Sun Kai from Tsinghua University analyzed AI-enabled power electronics technologies. Professor Zhou Keliang from Wuhan University of Technology elaborated on generalized integral control based on the internal model principle. To address deviations in test conditions and operating conditions existing in conventional reliability tests, Professor Ma Ke from Shanghai Jiao Tong University proposed an advanced reliability testing method for power electronic components and systems based on operating condition simulation. Starting from the limitations of existing model predictive control for AC motors, Professor Zhang Yongchang from North China Electric Power University (represented by Teacher Yang Haitao) innovatively put forward advanced control algorithms including model-free predictive current control based on variable sequence SVM. Delivering a presentation entitled "Drivers for Series-winding Motors", Professor Jiang Dong from Huazhong University of Science and Technology illustrated the superior performance of the series-winding topology in terms of voltage utilization ratio, control flexibility and fault tolerance, as well as its broad application prospects in electric vehicles, aerospace and other fields.

On the morning of October 12, participants held panel discussions on three separate topics in the Electrical Engineering Building. Experts, scholars and industry representatives engaged in in-depth exchanges and heated discussions focusing on three major themes: Vibration and Noise Reduction of Motor Systems, Intelligentization and Advanced Control of Electric Drive Systems, and Doubly-fed Machines and Their Systems. Many experts from academia and industry shared valuable insights. The event featured a vibrant academic atmosphere, fostering brainstorming from technical challenges to practical solutions, and facilitating consensus building and innovative thinking.

This marks the first time that the flagship conference of the Special Committee of Variable Frequency Power Supplies and Electric Drives under China Power Supply Society has been held in Wuhan. The Department of Applied Electronic Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering of our university undertook the organization work. The School of Electrical Engineering has long been actively involved in the development of China Power Supply Society and its affiliated branches, with many professors holding key positions within the society. Hosting the annual conference at Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a recognition of the school’s achievements. The IEEE PELS Wuhan Chapter, established based at our university, was honored as the IEEE PELS Chapter of the Year in 2020.
